I used an old coffee table from the alley to suspend a standard shop light
for growing plants.
I seeded Arugula, Spinach, Coriander, mustard greens, kale, and red lettuce.

Do you know if any grow lights can run on 12volt batteries? I wanted to solar power one.

The whole “grow light” thing is sort of a myth for starting seeds indoors. The lights you see are standard 4 foot fluorescent bulbs in a standard shop light fixture. (Total $20 from the hardware store). Your question about the batteries…. 12 volts may not be enough juice to power sufficient light output to produce stocky seedlings. I am not an expert on this. I’ve learned the bit that I do know from books and the gardenweb.com forums. Post there and you are sure to get several experts’ opinions.
